New Drone Protection Technology Secures Airspace Above Australian Commercial Sites and Venues

The potential for security breaches and damage to people and property as a result of recreational and commercial drone activity is tremendous, as technology continues to advance faster than regulation. Convexum® technology is pioneering solutions to combat the rising threat of uncontrolled drones, and those which may be used for malicious purposes.

Estimations put the number of drones in Australia at more than 100,000 with numbers only expected to grow. Many organisations are looking to mitigate the rising threat to security and safety linked to these unmanned aircraft.

Convexum® is one of the world’s leading counter-drone perimeter protection platforms, suitable for a range of highly sensitive and populous sites including sporting and entertainment venues, critical infrastructure, airports, landmarks, data centres, correctional facilities and private enterprise. In Australia, the system is licensed exclusively to Johnson Controls.

Despite laws requiring drone users to register their devices and obtain a remote pilot licence in certain instances, the laws can be difficult to enforce. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) provides thorough guidance on safety rules and accreditation requirements for drone users, however monitoring for unsafe drone behaviour is difficult without relying on reporting by members of the public.

The Convexum® system prevents commercial drone entry into protected airspace and lands them in a safe location designated by the customer. Convexum® also pinpoints drone controllers and denies take-off of their airborne devices.

If a drone is identified within the protected zone via the system’s radio frequency sensors, protocol manipulation is used to take over control of the drone, sending it to a pre-defined landing area.

The proactive anti-drone technology system is fully supported by trained experts within the Johnson Controls team and can benefit a wide range of sites, customised to the needs of each location and jurisdiction.
